Sam Haworth sets out to ‘Drive the Dream’

Friday, April 30th, 2010

Carpenter Box trainee accountant Sam Haworth is just about to set out on the 2010 Hospice Road Trip in aid of the Build a Dream foundation at St Barnabas.

There are 16 teams taking part, each team consisting of 2 people.  They have had to buy a car at least 10 years old and drive across Europe to Nurburgring in Germany and back in a week, hoping that their old bangers will make it without too many breakdowns on the way!

In the past 2 years the Roadtrip has raised over £20,000 for St Barnabas and the Chestnut Tree hospices, and the 2010 challenge is to raise more money to build and equip the new St Barnabas hospice presently being constructed.

Sam has had to raise a minimum of £2,000 and has been looking for sponsors to donate any amount of money, however small, to this great cause.   The new roadtrip has already managed to raise over £13,000 which is a fantastic achievement.  Carpenter Box have sponsored Sam’s car so our ‘red moon’ logo will be making its way across Europe over the bank holiday weekend.

There is a website with further details of the roadtrip at http://www.hospiceroadtrip.co.uk/, so take a look and keep up with their progress.

Firms hesitant over asking for loans

Thursday, April 29th, 2010

Small businesses are showing a continuing reluctance to approach banks for loans and credit.

In a survey of over 1,400 members of the Federation of Small Businesses (FSB), only 18 per cent said they had applied for new credit.

Of those, a half secured the financing they were seeking. A third (36 per cent) had their applications turned down, while a further 12 per cent were still awaiting a decision.  (See more on this story)

Thomas A Beckett pupils plan for a better Worthing!

Wednesday, April 28th, 2010

When we received an invitation from Thomas A Beckett Middle School to talk to their year 7 children about redeveloping Worthing we were really keen to particpate.  Carpenter Box have been in the town for over 85 years and are passionate about making Worthing a better place to live, visit and work.

Chris Coopey visited the school and was lucky enough to meet with around 30 year 7 kids together with Michael Tidd who is a teacher and project leader at the school.  A great time was had looking at and discussing their plans and talking about offices and leisure developments in the town (mainly in Teville Gate).  The kids were well behaved and communicated their ideas clearly and with vision.  Chris is really looking forward to 26th May to see the finished projects and was thrilled to receive the following message from the school:

‘Please accept my thanks for your visit to Thomas A Becket today. Having discussed the session with staff over lunchtime, and with the students involved, we are really pleased with how much we have got out of such a short session, and that is in no small part due to the amazing information and support you were able to offer. The chidren feel reinvigorated as they move forward with their planning, and the teaching team were particularly grateful for the impact your contributions have had. This has been our first trial at such a workshop approach, and we are thrilled with the outcomes!’

Carpenter Box welcomes Charlie Eve

Tuesday, April 27th, 2010

If you receive the Carpenter Box e-news letter (let me know if you don’t and want to) you’ll know that Charlie Eve joined Carpenter Box as a Director a couple of weeks ago.  Charlie was previously with another local firm and based in Chicester, but decided that he would prefer life at Carpenter Box.  Anyway,  it turns out that Charlie is a keen golfer so at last Alan Edwards has someone to  compete with.  In their first match at Mannings Heath Golf Club last week Alan came out on top after a very impressive round with a 5 over par 75 so the new boy still has a bit to do!  On a more serious note though, Charlie has already made an impression and it feels like he has been with us for much more than a fortnight.  If you know Charlie of old and want to catch up follow this link.

What the political parties are promising…

Monday, April 26th, 2010

It’s certainly hotting up and let’s face it, the war of words between the parties is unlikely to calm down this side of May 6th.  If you are like me and are wondering just exactly who is promising what take a look at this news item on the Carpenter Box website.

Rounding up…Go with Noakes and the Brighton and Hove Business Exhibition.

Monday, April 19th, 2010

The Business exhibition went well – Lucy Tunstall and I met lots of old friends and made some new ones too.  It was the beginning of the 2010 exhibition season and a good one at that.

The Finish Line!

Sunday was the Brighton Marathon and our very own Stuart Noakes was battling his way around the course.   Stu has the day off to recover but we’re looking forward to hearing his story tomorrow.   What we do know is that he has had over £1600 pledged the Carpenter Box Charitable Foundation to be given to the National Autistic Society, so well done Stu!

Brighton and Hove Business exhibition

Wednesday, April 14th, 2010

Looking forward to a day out of the office today at the year’s first business exhibition.  The Carpenter Box exhibition stand will be featuring at the B2B exhibition at Hove Town Hall where Chris Coopey and Lucy Tunstall will be meeting and greeting other businesses.

Election fever?

Thursday, April 8th, 2010

A week into the new financial year for Carpenter Box and the board has swung into action.  The point in question? How many seats should we take in the platinum zone of the new Brighton and Hove Albion Stadium and just as importantly, what division will the club be in when the stadium opens?  All very important stuff!

Of course there were other things on the agenda but none as interesting as the football – even though it was a difficult subject for some.  Business Services director Alan Edwards was mourning the fact that Man U fell to Bayern Munich last night.  The Arsenal supporters amongst us had a different view….

As for the election, well – it’s out of the bag, the pundits are under starters orders and we are off into what may well be one of the most interesting contests in decades with Carpenter Box’s favourite subject ‘tax’ taking centre stage. If nothing else, it’s a great time to be cliche spotting!

As for business, there are some positive signs that the recovery is still on course, the British Chambers of Commerce has said in its latest quarterly business survey.  Athough the economy looks as if it will avoid a double-dip recession, trading conditions seem set to remain tough, the BCC added. Optimism among consumers, however, took a slight dent last month, or so a separate survey has suggested.  So where does that leave us?  Thinking about the World Cup I shouldn’t wonder…..

Have a great Easter!

Thursday, April 1st, 2010

The new financial year beckons, but not until we’ve had a well deserved break! So happy Easter – fingers crossed the weather will be a bit kinder than of late!
