5 minutes with…Alan Edwards
What makes MHA Carpenter Box stand out from the rest is our people and their commitment to having great relationships with their clients, and with each other.
We posed a set of questions to people across our firm to provide a glimpse into the different lives and perspectives of our team members. From what they get up to outside of work, what inspires them and the best advice they’ve ever had to their outlook for the future.
Meet some of our team in our short ‘Five minutes with…’ series. First, we start with our Managing Partner, Alan Edwards!
Tell us about yourself
I’m Alan Steven Edwards, Managing Partner at MHA Carpenter Box. I was born in a small town called
Rustington a few miles West of Worthing were I have lived ever since. I am married with two children, Megan and Bailey. I met my wife, Samantha, whilst studying Accountancy and we were both working in a Seafood restaurant, Cockle and Bacon on the South Coast.
I Joined MHA Carpenter Box (my only two jobs have been for Companies with the initials CB!) in 1993 as a trainee and qualified in 1998 before becoming a Partner in 2006. I have been the Managing Partner for almost 6 years now.
What advice would you give to someone starting their career in accounting?
Whilst University is a traditional route into the accountancy profession, and provides a fantastic opportunity to grow as a person I would always recommend that consideration is given to an apprentice position immediately after secondary education. This can provide an incredible platform to start working towards becoming either an ICAEW or ACCA qualified accountant.
I would also recommend endeavouring to secure a work placement in the summer, perhaps after 12 months at college or 24 months of University. This provides a great insight to how life in the profession might be.
What does ‘now, for tomorrow’ mean to you?
Now for tomorrow, encapsulates what I believe our client’s needs. Every good professional should be able to deliver the day to day compliance that a client needs, but the truly great ones help their client’s look forward. They add value not only to the business but also consider how the wider stakeholders of the business can be positively impacted.
What personality traits make a good leader?
I think the most important personality traits in a good leader are Honesty and Integrity. Being able to connect and communicate with the wider team is very important, as too is the art of being a good listener.
What opportunities are there at the firm in the next few years?
Our firm is really well placed to continue to provide opportunities for individuals to grow and add value to our clients in the coming years. We have had significant growth in the number of staff and Partners over the last five years.
With our plans to increase our footprint in Sussex and the South, MHA Carpenter Box is the place to be for aspiring professionals and clients looking to achieve their business or personal goals.
