Carpenter Box Growth Academy – Mastery and Marketing
Before your business can grow, you have to grow first, by thinking and acting differently.
What is the Growth Academy?
Our new Growth Academy programme in partnership with Paul McCarthy of ActionCOACH Worthing is designed to help small business owners by teaching a practical, relevant, tailor-made business growth strategy, aimed at driving more profit into your business. The first session was focused primarily around two big questions in business: where am I right now? And where do I need to get to?
Part of defining answers to these questions was an introduction to Mastery and Marketing, two of the 6 steps to a better business. The idea behind the ‘6 steps’ is that they act as building blocks to create a business that can function and thrive without you, allowing you as the business owner to work on the business rather than in it.
What is Mastery?
Mastery is all about taking control and creating stability, serving as the foundation for growth. There are four main areas, around which you can reflect on your business:
- Where am I now?
- Where do I want to get to in the long, medium and short term?
- What’s the plan?
- Though I can’t manage time itself, what else can I manage?
- What is it like to deal with my company?
- Is it consistent to all clients?
- Do I understand my business numbers?
- Have I got a plan to improve the key metrics and the knowledge to do so?
Mastery refocuses your attention on the factors that impact the overall performance of your business and helps you to highlight areas that need more focus.
In doing so, you can create a solid and effective business plan that will keep you motivated through setting long and short-term goals. It will also hold you to some level of accountability as to whether you have achieved those goals.
It is key to adopt a growth mindset from this very first level. Through this, you can learn to embrace change and harness the positive power of it, and begin to see both successes and failures as equal learning opportunities. You expand your own boundaries of what you believe is possible for you and your business.
What is Marketing?
Marketing is the level where your business becomes a commercial, profitable enterprise. Marketing is centred around getting new customers and retaining existing customers profitably. In finding a USP and adding value to each transaction, your business can produce a predictable cash flow.
Shift your perspective from marketing being an expense to it being an investment, and one that will catalyse significant growth.
And ensure you test and measure everything you do! This will allow you to trial different methods of working, and provide you with comparable results so you can make effective improvements to your business. Why make changes until you have proof that the change will have the right effect?

Having a solid plan facilitates the commitment to take action, and is essential for driving profit into your business. Setting clear and quantifiable goals provides you with clear focus and direction to achieve them. After all, if you don’t know where you’re going, how are you going to get there?
