Celebrating 30 years at MHA Carpenter Box

Today we are celebrating a fantastic colleague who has reached 30 years of service with MHA Carpenter Box. David Hopper joined us on 4th July 1988 as a trainee and now, working as an Associate in the Business Services Group acts as a terrific example to us all.

David Hopper reflects on the last 30 years:

On this day, 4 July 1988, a shy individual just short of his 18th birthday, rocked up in his Renault 6TL for his first day at a smallish accountancy firm called Carpenter Box. That day saw the start of my career at Carpenter Box, and 30 years later, to the day, I am still here!

That first day was a nerve-racking experience. I was introduced to the tea rota, making drinks with weird plastic cups and their holders; I was told I had to buy cakes for my birthday 21 days later, and given the low down on the various partners at the time!

Back then, there were no computers on desks, partners used Dictaphones to draft letters for typists to type, and time was recorded on paper, then transferred into old ledger-stylebooks! Mobile phones and the internet were not even in people’s imaginations, although we did have colour TV. The Cloud was something in the sky blocking the sun!

Income tax was 27% for basic rate taxpayers and there was a top rate of 60%; Corporation Tax was 25-35%, and the individual personal allowance was just £2,605.

It has been a memorable 30 years and I have made many friends along the way. I would like to think I have had a positive impact on the firm. I have trained many, many staff, and I am proud to see what those who still work here have become.

Whilst may sound like a retirement speech it is far from it. Here’s to a few more years!

Alan Edwards, Managing Partner, comments:

David Hopper’s hard work and dedication is exceptional, but it is his overall commitment to helping others and going way beyond what is expected that make him a true success. I have many memories of working with David and I can honestly say that I have never worked with an individual that has a desire to help others as much as David.

The impact he has on his direct team as a mentor is incredible, he always has time for everyone and I have never seen him become impatient with anyone.

David – very many thanks for you significant contribution over the last 30 years, please know that it is very much appreciated by all.

David joins an illustrious group as we now have six members of staff in the 30+ gang. This group are respected and admired for past and current performance:

  1. Debbie Burbidge
  2. Paul Allwright
  3. Amanda Halstead
  4. Shobha Samuel
  5. Mark McDowell
  6. David Hopper

Congratulations to all for reaching such a momentous milestone!
