Karen’s Costa Rica Adventure!

Karen (third from right) and the team!

Last month, Associate and Head of Private Client Services, Karen Thomas undertook an epic 340km coast to coast cycle ride with Women V Cancer among the mountains and rainforests of Costa Rica, helping to raise vital funds for Breast Cancer Care, Jo’s Cervical Cancer Trust and Ovarian Cancer Action.

After 6 days, torrential rain and 38-degree heat, she made it! Together, the team managed to raise a staggering £317,000.00.

Below are a few extracts from Karen’s on-the-road diary as the days unfolded and some pictures from the trip!

Day 1:

We set off at 4am to the east coast in Costa Rica for the start our cycle adventure. Glorious sunshine turned to boiling temperatures. We crossed some narrow bridges and then torrential rain and thunderstorms followed. The ride had to be abandoned mid-afternoon for safety precautions! But an amazing first day – what an adventure!

Karen prepares for Day 1

Day 2:

A full day of cycling today! Not as tough as yesterday but still hard work! Fantastic camaraderie with the other women. We got to our hotel just in time for a tropical storm which meant no power – and a shower in the dark. All part of the challenge, I guess!

Day 3:

It was tough going today with 38-degree heat, but beautiful countryside and rolling hills. We’re doing it! We even had time to relax in the hot spring and spot some iguanas.

Day 4:

Not so hot today but very tired legs and sunburnt lips! Really challenging hills, I climbed over 3200 feet! But so rewarding amongst the beautiful scenery. Amazing to be a part of the great cause, raising money for Women V Cancer.

Day 5:

Sweat, tears, elation and terror all rolled into one! So many hills and the terrain was really tough which made it quite dangerous on steep downhills. I did it though – but I am exhausted and very sore! Thanks for your encouragement.

Day 6 (Final Day)

I did it, I did it!! What a challenge, so gruelling. Thank you, Costa Rica, for an amazing experience!

Afterwards, Karen had a few days of well-earned rest and relaxation! But she had this to say:

“Just to say thank you to everyone for your support and encouragement for my Costa Rica cycle challenge. Also a big thank you to MHA Carpenter Box partners and staff for their help, loan of equipment to assist my fundraising and advertising for my fantastic cause and of course to the Trustees of the Carpenter Box Charitable Foundation. I can honestly say it was a massive challenge and really quite grueling at times. Either torrential rain or 38 degree heat, but I did it and apart from being so tired I cycled into a rather deep ditch there were no real mishaps!”

Well done to Karen and everyone else who took part in the cycle ride on such a fantastic achievement!
