What is the HMRC app?

In response to the recent press about their declining performance, HMRC has taken inspiration from the UK’s ever-growing “fintech” industry. Encrypted with face ID or biometrics, HMRCs new app is a secure hub for all things tax.

The app comes loaded with various features that could be the silver bullet HMRC needs to reduce the strain on the organisation. Though the app is still young, with its current pace of updates and bug fixes, the HMRC app is well on its way to being a viable alternative to sitting on hold. There are some areas we still cannot access electronically as your Agent; therefore, we recommend you consider downloading HMRC’s app so that you can easily gain access to your Personal Tax Account.

How can you use the HMRC app?

Firstly, a Personal Tax Account needs to be set up. Once this is set up, you can download the HMRC app via the App Store or Play Store. Once downloaded, you can access your account using your Personal Tax Account user ID and password.

The app will allow you to:

  • Check your tax position.
  • Make Self Assessment tax payments
  • Request a repayment
  • Check and amend your tax codes
  • Check your national insurance contribution record to see your entitlement to benefits and state pension
  • Apply for child benefits,
  • Access your help to save your account and manage your personal information held by HMRC.

How can we help?

By having access to your Personal Tax Account, you can manage some aspects of your tax affairs more effectively. If you would like more advice on this, please do not hesitate to contact a member of our tax team.
