John Billings: a career that helped shape Carpenter Box

John Billings

We are marking a poignant moment for Carpenter Box as Senior Partner John Billings retires after more than 35 years of service to the firm. John’s career has spanned some of the most transformative periods in our long history, and his leadership has left a lasting imprint on the firm, our people and our clients.

John’s beginnings at Carpenter Box

When John Billings joined Carpenter Box in 1990, the firm had around 35 partners and staff. John arrived as a Partner Designate alongside Kevin Blake, both coming from large London-based firms. The duo brought fresh thinking and a shared ambition to help modernise and grow the firm. John, who had qualified in June 1987, became a Partner in April 1993.

With experience spanning both audit and corporate tax, John played a key role when the firm decided to develop specialist departments. He retrained and qualified as a Chartered Tax Adviser, initially leading the tax department and laying the foundations for what would become one of the firm’s strongest service lines.

By the mid-2000s, Carpenter Box was undergoing significant change. In April 2006, the firm became a Limited Liability Partnership, ending more than 80 years as a traditional partnership. During this period, John was shadowing Managing Partner Paul Archer in preparation for succession.

Managing Partner

John became Managing Partner in 2008 during a challenging time as the global financial crisis unfolded. Despite economic uncertainty, Carpenter Box continued to grow. His tenure was marked by the consolidation of new departments, continued investment in people, and a clear shift towards a modern, forward-thinking professional services business.

Championing the Carpenter Box Charitable Foundation

A defining part of John Billings’ legacy as Managing Partner was his role in initiating and championing the Carpenter Box Charitable Foundation (CBCF). Created to formalise the firm’s charitable giving, the Foundation reflects John’s belief in supporting local communities.

Key milestones included the firm’s 90th Birthday Ball in 2013, the “3-4-5 Challenge” which raised £12,000 for charity, and the Foundation’s 10-year anniversary in 2019, when £35,000 was raised through staff-led fundraising and volunteering. And in 2023, as Carpenter Box celebrated its centenary, colleagues and supporters raised £82,000 for the CBCF.

Senior Partner

In January 2015, John stepped down as Managing Partner, handing over the reins to Alan Edwards and becoming Senior Partner. He continued to support the Board and mentor the next generation of Partners, while remaining closely involved in specialist areas such as the Vineyard and Wineries sector.

A fitting accolade came in 2024, when Carpenter Box was named Tax Team of the Year at the Accounting Excellence Awards, reflecting the lasting strength of the tax function John helped to establish.

John's party

Reflecting on John’s contribution, Managing Partner Alan Edwards says:

“It’s important to understand the profound impact John has had, not only on Carpenter Box as a firm, but on so many individuals, including staff, fellow partners and clients.

On a personal note, John has been a great mentor to me. He will be greatly missed by colleagues and clients alike, and I would like to thank him sincerely for his outstanding contribution to the firm. John remains a true friend, an exceptional business partner, and a genuinely authentic leader.”

John’s legacy is visible across the firm today: in the strength and reputation of the tax team he helped build, and in the culture of mentorship, community involvement and professionalism that defines Carpenter Box.

As he enters retirement, we thank John for his extraordinary contribution and wish him every happiness in the years ahead.
